What is a PPS Number?

The Personal Public Service Number (PPSN or PPS Number) is a unique reference number for accessing social welfare benefits, public services, and information in Ireland. You need it for employment, taxation, opening bank accounts, and accessing healthcare.

PPS Number Format

The PPS Number has a seven-digit format followed by either one or two letters. Example: 1234567A or 1234567AB. The number is unique and stays with you for life.

Who Needs a PPS Number?

Everyone who works, claims social welfare, or accesses certain public services in Ireland needs a PPS Number. This includes:

  • Irish citizens

  • EU/EEA/Swiss nationals living or working in Ireland

  • Non-EEA nationals with appropriate permission to remain

  • Students (may need for part-time work)

How to Apply

Application Process

You must apply through your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office. Book an appointment online through MyWelfare.ie or by phone.

Required Documents

Irish Citizens:

  • Birth certificate or passport

  • Proof of address

EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens:

  • Passport or national identity card

  • Proof of address

  • Evidence of need (job offer letter, college acceptance)

Non-EEA Nationals:

  • Passport with appropriate visa/stamp

  • Irish Residence Permit (IRP)

  • Proof of address

  • Evidence of need

Processing Time

PPS Numbers are typically issued immediately at your appointment if all documentation is in order.

Irish Residence Permit (IRP)

What is the IRP?

Formerly called the GNIB card, the IRP is a registration certificate for non-EEA nationals with permission to remain in Ireland for longer than three months.

Who Needs an IRP?

All non-EEA nationals staying longer than 90 days, including:

  • Students

  • Work permit holders

  • Critical Skills Employment Permit holders

  • Family reunification cases

  • Other long-stay permissions

Application Process

  1. Register online within required timeframe (varies by immigration status)

  2. Book appointment at local registration office

  3. Attend appointment with required documents

  4. Pay fee: €300 (valid for period of permission granted)

  5. Collect card when notified (typically within weeks)

Required Documents

  • Passport with valid visa

  • Letter from employer or college

  • Proof of private medical insurance (if required)

  • Evidence of financial means

  • Proof of address

Proof of Address

Obtaining proof of address can be challenging for newcomers. Acceptable documents include:

  • Utility bills (electricity, gas, water)

  • Bank statements

  • Rental agreement

  • Letter from government department

For those without proof of address:

  • Some banks accept temporary addresses

  • Hostels or hotels can provide confirmation letters

  • College accommodation letters accepted by some institutions

  • Use services like Revolut or N26 that don't require Irish proof of address initially

Driver's License

EU/EEA Licenses

Valid for use in Ireland. Can be exchanged for Irish license without retaking tests. Must display 'L' or 'N' plates if under required experience period.

Non-EU Licenses

Valid for 12 months from date of entry. After that, you must:

  • Apply for Irish provisional license (theory test required)

  • Complete required lessons

  • Pass driving test for full license

Irish Learner Permit

To obtain:

  1. Apply for learner permit online through NDLS

  2. Pass driver theory test

  3. Complete Essential Driver Training lessons

  4. Apply for driving test

  5. Pass test to receive full license

Tax Registration

Tax Registration Number

Same as your PPS Number. Used for all tax purposes.

Registering as Employee

Your employer typically handles PAYE registration. Ensure you receive your Tax Credit Certificate.

Self-Employment Registration

Register as self-employed through Revenue Online Service (ROS). Obtain tax clearance certificate for contracts.

Timeline for New Arrivals

Week 1-2:

  • Find temporary accommodation

  • Apply for PPS Number

  • Register for IRP (if non-EEA)

Week 2-4:

  • Open bank account

  • Register with GP

  • Apply for public services card (if eligible)

Ongoing:

  • Update addresses with all agencies when moving

  • Renew IRP before expiry

  • Keep all documents organized and accessible
